Ricardo A. Alvarez was an invited speaker and panelist at the 26th Annual Governor’s Hurricane Conference held at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Broward County Convention Center, on 13-18 May 2012.
Ricardo spoke on the topic of “STORM SURGE: A dangerous and neglected hazard” during one of the concurrent sessions during the conference, on Thursday 17 May, which addressed the matter of Current Trends in Mitigation of Essential Facilities and included Jeff Robinson, CEO of Hurricane Protection Industries [HPI Worldwide], Miramar, Florida, and Danny Killcollins, Mitigation Planner for the Florida Division of Emergency Management [DEM], as the other two panelists. The main focus of the session was on the effects of recent changes to standards such as ASCE-7, ASCE-24, ICC-500, and to the Florida Building Code.
